Why Our Cedar Park & Leander Athletes Train In-Season

Leander ISD high school athlete performing strength training at Barbell Coalition

For a great deal of athletes, strength & conditioning training is only done in the off-season. While in-season time is strictly spent in sport practice & games.

This is the incorrect approach, and often leads to athletes not performing at their full potential.

Here are just a few reasons why we encourage our Cedar Park & Leander athletes to continue strength training even while they're in-season for their sport.

Strength & Power Maintenance

The biggest issue with discontinuing strength & conditioning training when the season starts is the eventual loss of the gains made during the off-season.

This means athletes will feel strong and fast during the beginning of the season, but eventually peter out.

Then, when athletes enter the off-season again and get back in the weight-room, they're starting back at square one, rather than building off the gains they already made to continue to get stronger and faster.

Injury Resistance

Injuries are one of the worst things that can happen for an athlete. Along with the physical effects of an injury, the psychological effects can be just as worse.

It's important that we do everything we can for athletes to stay injury-free while in-season.

This is why strength training can't be neglected during the season.

When athletes lift weights, yes they're making their muscles stronger, but they're also strengthening their bones, tendons & ligaments, effectively making these areas more resilient to injury.

The gym is a place to get stronger, yes, but it is also a place for athletes to make their bodies as physically resilient as possible.

Boost Recovery

While in-season, it's important that athletes are recovering properly between games & practices.

Lifting weights encourages blood-flow to the areas we're lifting with. And increased blood flow leads to better, faster healing.

When athletes perform rigorously in games or tough practices, small microtears are occurring on their muscles. This is totally normal, and healed up during recovery time.

By continuing to lift weights in-season, we can make this process faster by improving blood flow to those areas.
